What is the Slice tool?

The Slice tool allows you to cut one overlapping image out of another image. Slice creates new cut paths from two images, creating completely new shapes. Each of the new shapes will show up as individual layers in the Layers panel.

How to Slice in Cricut Design Space

For this example, I will be showing you how to Slice text out of a Cricut Mug Press template. You can use the same method to slice any two images.

Step 1: Arrange the images so that they are overlapping the way you want.

Step 2: Select both the images. Select both images by holding the Shift or the Ctrl key (Command for Mac) on your keyboard while clicking on each layer. A box will appear around both images, and the individual layers will be highlighted in dark grey in the Layers panel. Once the two layers are selected, the Slice tool will become clickable at the bottom left-hand corner of your Layers panel.

Step 3: Click the “Slice” button at the bottom of the Layers panel. New images will appear in the Layers panel as sliced images.

Separate the layers to see your new shapes.

Step 4: Hide or delete the images you do not want. Now you can continue to layer and slice the image until you reach your desired design.

What you can do with the Slice tool:

  • You can use the Slice tool to cut out a shape from another shape, cut overlapping shapes from one another, or cut text from a shape.

  • When using Slice with images, you can only work with two layers at one time.

  • If you are using a multilayered image, you can either hide or ungroup the other layers to activate the Slice tool.

  • When the Slice function is performed with hidden layers, all hidden layers will be removed from the design screen and the Layers panel.

  • If you would like to use those image layers with your project, ungroup before using the Slice tool.

There are so many things you can do with the slice tool. If you can dream it the Slice tool can help you make it.
